    "In the 1950s I know that people would set out on immense walking journeys, as a normal part of life. We all know about the Cooee March! But Burma to India… jungle… mountains…. Hostile invaders pleased to kill you… This had to be a pretty courageous person and a significant journey."

    "Once on their 660-mile journey, when desperate with hunger and weariness, they had given themselves up to the Japanese, but the Japanese would not have them, so openly now they had kept on, staggering along roads between long lines of advancing Japanese troops."
