"The only problem was, that he came from a strict Jewish family and was expected to marry a nice Jewish girl.  Phillip rebelled against this as he really loved Mary. After dating for a few months their relationship became quite serious and Mary found that she was pregnant.   OH! Dear! What to do? Abortion was out of the question for Mary. Philip could be posted overseas but it would mean leaving Mary which he could not do. He wanted to marry her."

"They  decided to marry and tied the knot at a civil ceremony in a London registry office in 1908 and Phillip resigned from the army.  Phillip’s family disowned him and cut him off from the family, who were quite wealthy, without a penny."
